Why Is My Package Late?

A late package is frustrating, especially when the tracking page doesn't explain anything. The good news: most delays come down to a small number of causes, and you can usually figure out which one is affecting your shipment.

Below are the most common reasons packages run late, what each one means, and the steps that actually help. When you're ready, paste your tracking number into Package Delay and we'll translate the status and estimate the most likely cause.

The most common reasons a package is late

Delays almost always trace back to one of these:

  • Weather — storms, snow, flooding, or extreme heat slow or stop carrier operations.
  • High volume — holidays and sales events overload sorting facilities.
  • A missed or skipped scan — the package is moving, but a scan didn't register, so tracking looks frozen.
  • Address problems — an incomplete or incorrect address triggers an exception.
  • Customs — international shipments can sit for days awaiting clearance.
  • Failed delivery attempt — nobody was available, or access was blocked.

How to tell which one is happening

Look at the most recent scan and how long ago it was. If the last update is more than 24–48 hours old and the package isn't marked delivered, that's a sign it's genuinely stuck rather than just quietly moving.

Also check the status wording. 'Exception' usually means a real problem (weather, address, or customs). 'In transit' with recent scans usually means it's just moving slowly.

What you can do

  1. 1Track the package and note the date/time of the last scan.
  2. 2Check the weather and holidays for the destination area (our ZIP checker does this for you).
  3. 3Confirm the shipping address on your order is correct and complete.
  4. 4Wait 24–48 hours if it's only been a short time — most packages catch up on their own.
  5. 5If it's been more than 48 hours with no movement, contact the carrier or seller.

When to contact the carrier

Contact the carrier if there's been no scan for more than 48 hours, the status shows an exception you don't understand, or the estimated delivery date has clearly passed. If you bought from a marketplace, contacting the seller first is often faster.

Questions & answers

Is my package lost if tracking stops updating?

Usually not. Packages often go a day or two without a scan, especially on weekends or between facilities. If there's no update for more than 48 hours, treat it as stuck and contact the carrier.

Can weather really delay my package?

Yes — severe weather is one of the top causes of delays. Snow, ice, flooding, and storms can shut down facilities and ground transportation for days. Use our ZIP checker to see current conditions.
